KWU Football taps Bob Frey as Defensive Coordinator

Kansas Wesleyan University has named Bob Frey as its new Football Defensive Coordinator, Colby Hensley who left the program after spending nine years with the Coyotes.

Hensley, who joined the Coyote coaching staff in 2001, leaves Wesleyan to join former KWU coach Mike Waldie at Luling High School in a similar position. Waldie was defensive coordinator for the Coyotes for one season in 2001, and Hensley became defensive coordinator at KWU in 2002 following Waldie’s departure.

Frey comes to Kansas Wesleyan after spending one season at Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass., where he was assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Amcats in their inaugural season of football in 2009.

Prior to Anna Maria, Frey spent three seasons at Olivet College (Mich.) as offensive line coach. While at Olivet, Frey helped the Comets win the 2007 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championship and make an appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Frey also spent one year as defensive coordinator for the now defunct Kalamazoo Xplosion of the Continental Indoor Football League.

Prior to his tenure at Olivet, Frey spent three seasons at Tri-State University (now Trine University (Ind.)) as head coach, compiling a 2-28 record.

Before Tri-State, Frey spent nine seasons from 1994-2003 at MacMurray College (Ill.) as Head Coach. Frey excelled during that time, leading his team to six Conference Championships, including four-straight from 1996 to 1999. Frey compiled four of the best win-loss records in the program’s history, including trips to the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 2001 and 2002. Frey’s 1998 team led Division III in scoring. He was named Illini-Badger Football Conference Coach of the Year in 1998, 2001, and 2002, as well as being named the Co-Coach of the Year in 1996, and was honored as the SLIAC Football Coach of the Year in both 1997 and 1998. Prior to becoming head coach at MacMurray, Frey was defensive coordinator for the Highlanders for five seasons from 1990 to 1994.

Frey also previously held coaching positions at Manchester College (Ind.), Edgewood High School (Ohio), and at Mount Union College (Ohio) where he began his coaching career in 1985.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Union College in Physical Education and Health in 1985.

He has three children Mary, Emily and Billy.
