WICHITA – The Kansas Wesleyan Women's Basketball team couldn't overcome a physical attack from the Friends Falcons on Thursday night at the Garvey Center in Wichita. The Falcons powered their way to a 76-57 win to remain in second place in the KCAC standings behind Tabor College.
The Coyotes trailed by 11 at the half, but Friends opened the second half with a 10-4 run to take a 45-28 lead with 17:54 left. The Coyotes made a run back at the Falcons, with a 6-0 run to get back within 11 with 16:03 left on a bucket by Christian Cassity.
A three by Alecia Smith with 13:34 got the Coyotes within 10 at 50-40, and the Coyotes had a golden chance to get the deficit under double digits on free throws by Cassity. She would miss the charities and Friends followed with a 7-0 run to take a 57-40 lead with 10:54 to go.
Friends pushed its lead to 22 points twice, the last time coming at the 6:37 mark on a bucket by Sarah Munds when the Coyotes made another run at the Falcons. Sparked by a three by Stephanie Frost, Wesleyan cut Friends' lead to 14 on an 8-0 run capped by Kalie LeShore's free throws with 3:03 to go.
A late three by reserve Kayla Justice pushed Friends' lead back out to 22 points, but Alecia Smith's 3-point play with 9.7 seconds left capped the scoring in the game as Friends came away with the 76-57 win.
Things didn't start out particularly pretty for the Coyotes, who didn't hit their first field goal until the 18:03 mark against Friends' tough, physical man-to-man offense. The Falcons also employed a zone for part of the half.
Wesleyan led briefly 4-2 on Kalie LeShore's free throw with 15:45 to go, but a 13-1 run by Friends pushed the Falcon lead to 10 points at 15-5 with 10:13 to go in the first half on a three by Sydnee Henderson.
Frost hit a pair of free throws to get Wesleyan back within five with 6:25 to go that made it 19-14, but seven straight by Friends capped by a steal and layup by Minta Whetstone pushed Friends lead back out to 12 with 5:19 to go in the half.
Wesleyan trailed by 13 with just under two minutes to go in the half when the Coyotes got back within nine on Christian Cassity's driving layup with 1:13 to go before the half. Inekka Stevenson sent Friends into the half leading by 11 when she hit a shot just before the halftime buzzer to make it 35-24 at the break.
Smith led the Coyotes with 16 points and a game high 15 rebounds as the Coyotes were 18-of-53 from the field for 34 percent. Frost was the only other Coyote in double figures with 13.
Whitney Bates had 18 points to lead Friends and all scorers in the game as the Falcons shot 50 percent in the second half and 28-of-62 for the game for 45.2 percent. Ashlynn Steffenson led the Falcons with eight rebounds.
