LEAVENWORTH – A second straight heartbreaker for the Kansas Wesleyan Men's Basketball team. The Coyotes led for nearly the entire second half, but Saint Mary's Shiron Williams hit a diving, falling away shot at the buzzer to give the Spires an 81-79 win over the Coyotes on Thursday night at the Ryan Sports Center.
The Coyotes led from the 6:25 mark of the first half until the shot at the buzzer. Jordan Wilcox hit the game tying free throws with 32 seconds left after a foul was called on Dane Brinker when it initially appeared Wilcox slipped and fell down.
Brock Borovetz missed a potential game winning three with three seconds left and the Spires rebounded and called timeout to set up the final play, a baseball pass to Williams from Kevin Harvey. The Coyotes failed to score in the final 2:50 of the game, as Saint Mary erased what was then a 79-72 lead for Wesleyan.
The game opened as a back and forth affair between the Coyotes and the Spires, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Wesleyan led 10-6 early on after a triple by Brinker and went up 15-10 on a three by Borovetz with 15:08 to go in the first half.
Saint Mary used a 7-0 run to take a 17-15 lead with 12:32 to go, but the Coyotes would stay with the Spires, tying the score at 21-all with 9:28 to go in the half. Chip Schneider hit a three for Saint Mary to give the Spires a 24-21 lead, but another triple by Brinker with 7:41 left in the half gave the Coyotes the lead 28-26.
Marc McGory gave Saint Mary a 30-28 lead with a stickback with 6:25 left only to see Weber answer with a three to give the Coyotes the lead that they would not relinquish until the shot at the buzzer.
Sterling Roaf got within a point at 33-32 with 4:15 left before the break, but the Coyotes would build as much as a five point lead before taking a 38-34 lead into the half.
Brinker gave Wesleyan a 45-36 lead with 17:33 left in the game and a three by Michael Johnson put the Coyotes up by double digits for the first time with 16:23 left at 48-38. Another three by Scott Weber with 15:01 left put the Coyotes up 10 again before a 7-0 run by Saint Mary got the Spires within three with 13:50 to go at 51-48.
Freshman Joey Long hit a big bucket for the Coyotes on the next possession getting the Coyotes going in the right direction as a Johnson bucket put the Coyotes back up 10 with 12:10 to go. The Spires got back within four with 10:18 to go, but another pair of Johnson free throws sparked another Wesleyan run.
Wilcox was called for a Class A technical with 9:09 to go and the Coyotes converted the free throws and then a free throw miss by Schneider turned into a bucket by Fields for the Coyotes to put them up 10 at 65-55 with 8:53 to go.
Garret Pasold buried a three in the corner with 8:15 to go to put the Coyotes up 68-57 as Wesleyan would hold an 11-point margin twice more, the last coming at the 5:54 mark. Johnson's free throws with 2:50 left put the Coyotes up 79-72, but turned out to be the final points of the night for the Coyotes.
Fields led Wesleyan (2-8, 0-3 KCAC) and all scorers in the game with 24 points, while Johnson had a 16-point, 10 rebound double-double. The Coyotes shot 26-of-61 from the field for 42.6 percent. Fields had seven assists for the Coyotes, while Borovetz had three steals.
