LEAVENWORTH – No "Curse of the Ryan" for the Kansas Wesleyan women on Thursday night against the Saint Mary Spires. The Coyotes shot 50 percent in the first half and 41 percent for the game as they crushed the Spires 78-53 on Thursday night at the Ryan Sports Center in Leavenworth.
Stephanie Frost looked like the Frost we have all learned to like the last 3-plus seasons, scoring 26 points, just one from her career high of 27, to lead all scorers in the game.
The teams traded triples to open the game, as Alecia Smith and Vanessa Kresin dropped long rangers for the Coyotes to give them a 6-3 lead with 18:35 to go in the first half. Wesleyan blew its lead out to eight points, 16-8 on a bucket by Christian Cassity with 15:09 to go in the half.
A free throw from Saint Mary's Jordan Van Ness got the Spires withine five at 16-11 when the Coyote defense took over, holding the Spires scoreless for three minutes while building a 24-11 lead with 12:42 to go in the half. A three from Frost with 11:14 left ballooned Wesleyan's lead to 15 points at 31-16.
Kresin's score with 9:06 to go in the half pushed the Coyote lead to 17. The Spires would get back within 15 with 3:52 to go in the half, but Wesleyan closed the period on a 4-0 run to take a 50-29 lead into the break.
Saint Mary (4-7, 0-3 KCAC) never got closer than 19 points in the second half, when Shelby Watson scored with 19:04 to go to make it 52-33. Wesleyan (4-6, 2-1 KCAC) quickly got the advantage back over 20 points, and pushed the lead out to a game-high 28 points with 8:30 to go on a pair of foul shots by Kresin.
Neither team scored in the final 3 minutes and 15 seconds of the game as the Coyotes cruised to the 25-point win.
Frost's near career high of 26 points led all scorers in the game as Wesleyan was 29-of-70 from the field for 41.4 percent. Smith had a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead all rebounders in the game as Wesleyan outrebounded the Spires 46-36 in the game. Kresin added 20 points for the Coyotes.
Bailey Hooker and Watson led Saint Mary with 10 points each as the Spires were 21-of-59 from the field for 35.6 percent. Tracie Weege led the Spires with five rebounds.
Wesleyan plays its final KCAC game of the fall semester at home against Friends on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m., from Mabee Arena in Salina.
